Summary

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) impairs verbal memory integration, but positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment reverses these deficits. Memory performance improved after one night of PAP and remained stable long-term.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the immediate and delayed effects of OSA and PAP treatment on verbal memory integration.
  • To assess the reversibility of OSA-related verbal memory deficits.

Main Methods:

  • A false memory paradigm was used with 23 OSA patients.
  • Participants completed word list learning and recognition tasks at baseline, after one night of PAP titration, and after three months of compliant PAP treatment.
  • Sleep quality, fatigue, and psychomotor vigilance were also assessed.

Main Results:

  • PAP treatment improved sleep quality and led to OSA remission.
  • Recognition of learned words and lures increased significantly after the first night of PAP treatment and remained stable at three months.
  • No significant changes in psychomotor vigilance test performance were observed with PAP treatment.

Conclusions:

  • OSA detrimentally affects verbal learning and semantic memory integration.
  • PAP treatment effectively reverses these deficits, restoring normal memory integration and semantic processing.
  • The benefits of PAP treatment on verbal memory are evident shortly after initiation and are sustained with compliant use.
