Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

1.3K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Bootstrapping01:24

Bootstrapping

710
The term "bootstrap" originated in the 19th century as a metaphor for self-improvement or achieving something independently, without external assistance. This concept extends to statistical bootstrapping, a self-contained method for estimating population parameters through resampling, even though it can be computationally intensive. Developed by the American statistician Dr. Bradley Efron in 1979, bootstrapping provides a robust way to perform inference when the original sample size is...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Visuospatial bootstrapping, an effect enhancing memory span with keypads, can occur even without a visible keypad. Participants trained to visualize a keypad mentally achieved similar memory recall, demonstrating the effect

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Human Memory
  • Visuospatial Cognition

Background:

  • The visuospatial bootstrapping effect describes enhanced memory span when digits are presented on a visual numerical keypad.
  • Previous research has primarily focused on the presence of an actual keypad during digit presentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether the visuospatial bootstrapping effect can be elicited without the on-screen presentation of a numerical keypad.
  • To explore the spatial representation of digits in memory after mental keypad visualization training.

Main Methods:

  • A three-phase experiment comparing immediate serial recall performance between a 'keypad group' (visual keypad) and an 'auditive group' (no visual keypad).
  • Phase 1: Pre-training recall comparison.
  • Phase 2: Mental keypad visualization training for all participants.
  • Phase 3: Post-training recall assessment and spatial representation analysis.

Main Results:

  • Post-training, both the keypad group and the auditive group exhibited comparable immediate serial recall performance.
  • This indicates that visuospatial bootstrapping can be achieved without the explicit on-screen display of a keypad.
  • Both groups demonstrated spatialization of digits consistent with the standard keypad layout (1-4-7 left, 2-5-8 middle, 3-6-9 right).

Conclusions:

  • The visuospatial bootstrapping effect is not dependent on the continuous visual presence of a numerical keypad.
  • Mental visualization of a keypad is sufficient to induce the memory enhancement associated with this effect.
  • Individuals spontaneously adopt a spatial representation of digits mirroring the physical keypad layout, even when only hearing the digits.
