Receptor-mediated Endocytosis01:38

Receptor-mediated Endocytosis

Overview
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum01:21

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum or smooth ER is a sub-organelle with specialized functions in animal cells and plant cells. It is often associated with the tubule morphology of the endoplasmic reticulum.
The ER provides optimal conditions for synthesizing steroid hormones and lipids, such as phospholipids and triglycerides. Traditionally, lipid metabolism was considered to be a smooth ER function. However, there is no direct evidence to prove that rough ER is completely excluded from lipid...
Liver Regeneration01:24

Liver Regeneration

The liver is an important organ in vertebrates that plays an essential role in metabolism. It is also responsible for storing and redistributing nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins in the body. Additionally, the liver releases bile salts which are critical for digesting food and eliminating toxic metabolites from the body.
Cells of Liver
The liver comprises four major types of cells— hepatocytes, stellate, Kupffer, and sinusoidal endothelial cells. The hepatocytes are large...
Liver Histology01:27

Liver Histology

The microscopic anatomy of the liver is a complex and intricate system that comprises numerous structural units known as liver lobules, each of which is comparable in size to a sesame seed. These hexagonal structures consist of plates of liver cells or hepatocytes, which are characterized by their versatility and abundance of cellular apparatus like rough and smooth ER, Golgi apparatus, peroxisomes, and mitochondria.
Hepatocytes perform a variety of essential functions. They secrete...
Lipid Absorption01:24

Lipid Absorption

Dietary triglycerides from chyme in the duodenum are mixed with bile salts produced by the liver to emulsify fats. As a result, large droplets are broken down into smaller ones, increasing the surface area for enzymatic action. Once emulsified, pancreatic lipases hydrolyze the triglycerides into free fatty acids and monoglycerides.
These breakdown products bind with bile salts and lecithin to form micelles, which quickly pass between microvilli to come in close contact with the apical...
Lipid Catabolism01:25

Lipid Catabolism

Triglycerides serve as crucial long-term energy storage molecules in microorganisms, providing a dense source of metabolic energy. Their breakdown is mediated by lipases, which hydrolyze triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids. Each of these components follows distinct metabolic pathways, ultimately contributing to ATP synthesis and cellular energy homeostasis.Glycerol MetabolismGlycerol, released from triglyceride hydrolysis, is phosphorylated by glycerol kinase to form...

Summary

Patients with jealous delusions in delusional disorder often experience a single delusion and a more benign course, with less need for psychiatric treatment. Their condition tends to remain stable over time.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Delusional disorder is a psychiatric condition characterized by persistent false beliefs.
  • Subtypes of delusional disorder, such as jealous and nonjealous, may have different clinical courses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical course and characteristics of patients with jealous delusions versus those with nonjealous delusions.
  • To investigate the long-term outcomes for individuals diagnosed with delusional disorder.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 101 patients admitted between 1920 and 1980.
  • Classification into jealous (43 patients) and nonjealous (58 patients) delusion groups.
  • Follow-up data collected via telephone interviews with patients and relatives.

Main Results:

  • Patients with jealous delusions were more likely to present with a single delusion.
  • Jealous delusion patients showed a more benign course, evidenced by lower hospitalization and outpatient treatment rates.
  • The primary delusion in jealous patients tended to persist, without evolving into other psychiatric conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Jealous delusions in delusional disorder may represent a more circumscribed and stable form of the illness.
  • The findings suggest that jealous delusional disorder follows a less severe trajectory compared to nonjealous subtypes.
