Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

361
Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Bulimia Nervosa

307
Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...

Binge Eating Disorders

251
Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...

Self-Discrepancy and Its Effects

116
Self-discrepancy theory explains how people compare their actual self to their ideal and ought selves and how mismatches between these self-guides can lead to emotional distress. Developed by E. Tory Higgins, the theory distinguishes among three components of self-concept: the actual self, the ideal self, and the ought self. These refer respectively to how individuals perceive themselves, how they aspire to be, and how they believe they are obligated to be. Emotional well-being, self-esteem,...

Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

34.2K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.6K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Summary

Research on disordered eating introduces the Hourglass Body Shape Ideal Scale (HBSIS) to measure internalization of curvy ideals. Higher HBSIS scores correlate with increased disordered eating symptoms, highlighting a new area of concern.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Eating Disorder Research
  • Sociocultural Influences

Background:

  • Disordered eating research traditionally focuses on thin or muscular ideals.
  • The impact of internalizing a curvy or hourglass body shape ideal is less understood.
  • Sociocultural pressures contribute to body image concerns and disordered eating.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Hourglass Body Shape Ideal Scale (HBSIS) for measuring internalization of an hourglass body shape.
  • To examine the relationship between hourglass ideal internalization and disordered eating symptoms.
  • To assess the psychometric properties of the HBSIS.

Main Methods:

  • Two online studies were conducted with community and undergraduate women (N = 916 in Study 1, N = 195 in Study 2).
  • Participants completed the HBSIS along with measures of appearance orientation, overweight preoccupation, and disordered eating.
  • Factor structure, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of the HBSIS were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • The HBSIS demonstrated robust factor structure, convergent, and discriminant validity in both studies.
  • Hourglass Body Shape Ideal Scale scores were positively correlated with disordered eating symptoms, even after controlling for other ideals.
  • Higher HBSIS scores were associated with a greater likelihood of clinical levels of disordered eating.

Conclusions:

  • The HBSIS is a reliable and valid measure for assessing hourglass body shape ideal internalization.
  • This scale captures a unique aspect of appearance-ideal internalization previously understudied in eating pathology.
  • Findings suggest that the internalization of a curvy ideal is a significant factor in disordered eating.
