Parkinson's Disease: Overview01:15

Parkinson's Disease: Overview

1.1K
Neurodegenerative disorders are progressive diseases that cause irreversible damage and loss to neurons in specific brain areas. Examples of these disorders include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). These disorders share characteristics such as proteinopathies, selective neuronal vulnerability, and a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The primary therapeutic goal for these conditions is...

Parkinson's Disease: Treatment

694
Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease (PD), involve the gradual and irreversible destruction of neurons in particular brain areas. These disorders exhibit standard features like proteinopathies, selective vulnerability of some neurons, and an interaction of intrinsic properties, genetics, and environmental influences in neural injury.
Parkinson's Disease is primarily a result of the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The cornerstone of...

Neural Regulation

41.1K
Digestion begins with a cephalic phase that prepares the digestive system to receive food. When our brain processes visual or olfactory information about food, it triggers impulses in the cranial nerves innervating the salivary glands and stomach to prepare for food.

Pneumonia I: Introduction

466
Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection that targets the lungs, specifically the alveoli. These tiny air sacs, essential for oxygen exchange, become engorged with pus and fluid, severely hindering breathing, decreasing oxygen absorption, and causing significant pain and discomfort during respiration.
Risk Factors
Various factors influence the likelihood of developing pneumonia. Age plays a crucial role, with infants, children under two, and individuals over 65 at increased risk due to their...

Psychosis: Goals of Pharmacotherapy

306
Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation.

Acute Respiratory Failure-III01:30

Acute Respiratory Failure-III

453
Hypercapnic respiratory failure, also known as Type 2 or ventilatory respiratory failure, is a severe condition characterized by the body's inability to effectively remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the bloodstream. It leads to an arterial CO2 pressure (PaCO2) exceeding 45 mmHg and a blood pH above 7.35. This situation indicates that the body's ventilatory demand, or the ventilation needed to maintain normal PaCO2 levels, surpasses its supply or the maximum gas flow achievable without...

Summary

Falls are a significant risk factor for acute hospitalizations in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Identifying and preventing falls can reduce hospital admissions for individuals with PD.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Geriatrics
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) patients face a need for identifying hospitalization risk factors.
  • Interventions are required to decrease acute hospital admissions in PD patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency, causes, and predictors of acute hospitalization (AH) in Parkinson's disease patients.
  • To analyze data from a Spanish cohort to understand hospitalization trends in PD.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the COPPADIS-2015 cohort, including 605 Parkinson's disease patients from 35 Spanish centers.
  • Employed Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox regression analysis to identify predictors of acute hospitalization within a 1-year follow-up period.

Main Results:

  • 5.8% of Parkinson's disease patients experienced acute hospitalization within one year.
  • Traumatic falls were the most frequent cause (23.7%) of acute hospitalizations.
  • Motor fluctuations, severe non-motor symptoms, falls, and dysphagia were associated with AH; falls emerged as an independent predictor.

Conclusions:

  • Falls are identified as an independent predictor of acute hospitalization in Parkinson's disease patients.
  • Preventive strategies targeting falls are crucial for reducing hospitalizations in this population.
