Higher physical activity levels in middle-aged women are linked to fewer sleep problems. This study highlights the importance of exercise for improving sleep quality in this demographic.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Sleep Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Sleep disturbances are common in middle-aged women.
- Physical activity is a potential modifiable factor influencing sleep.
- Menopause and associated symptoms can impact sleep quality.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between physical activity levels and sleep problems in middle-aged women.
- To determine if higher physical activity is associated with a lower incidence of insomnia.
Main Methods:
- A pilot study involving 80 women aged 45-65.
- Utilized the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS).
- Included the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) to assess menopausal symptoms.
Main Results:
- 57.14% of participants reported a sedentary lifestyle.
- Significant differences in physical activity levels were observed between women with and without insomnia (p = 0.025).
- Psychological problems were the most frequently reported menopausal symptom.
Conclusions:
- Physical activity significantly influences sleep quality in middle-aged women.
- Promoting physical activity may be a key strategy for managing sleep issues in this population.
