Summary

A rare retrorectal cystic hamartoma was surgically removed from a 58-year-old female. The patient recovered fully, highlighting successful surgical intervention for this benign retrorectal tumor.

Background:

Retrorectal tumors are uncommon, encompassing both benign and malignant conditions.
Accurate differential diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management of retrorectal masses.

Purpose of the Study:

To report a case of a large retrorectal cystic hamartoma.
To describe the diagnostic process and surgical management of this rare tumor.

Main Methods:

A 58-year-old female presented with low back pain and constipation.
Diagnostic workup included digital rectal examination, colonoscopy, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Surgical resection was performed via laparotomy.

Main Results:

A huge retrorectal cystic hamartoma compressing the rectum was identified.
Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of retrorectal cystic hamartoma.
The patient experienced a full recovery and was discharged eight days post-surgery.

Conclusions:

Retrorectal cystic hamartomas, though rare, are amenable to surgical resection.
Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention lead to favorable patient outcomes.
