Centralized reminder/recall systems for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination showed limited success in increasing rates among adolescents. However, these systems, particularly autodialers, may expedite series completion at a low cost.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Preventive Medicine
- Vaccinology
Background:
- Centralized reminder/recall (C-R/R) systems are effective for childhood immunizations.
- Previous C-R/R using autodialers did not improve human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine rates.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess C-R/R for HPV vaccine using various modalities in younger adolescents.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of different reminder/recall methods on HPV vaccination initiation and completion.
Main Methods:
- A three-arm pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in primary care practices in Colorado and New York.
- Adolescents aged 11-14 years who had not completed the HPV vaccination series were randomized to receive C-R/R via autodialer, mail, text, or control.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in HPV vaccine series initiation were observed across arms in either state.
- A slight improvement in series completion was noted for the autodialer arm in Colorado (p = .04), and C-R/R reduced time to completion by approximately 2 months.
- No significant differences in initiation or completion were found in New York; costs were low for all intervention modalities.
Conclusions:
- C-R/R demonstrates less benefit for increasing HPV vaccination rates compared to other childhood immunizations.
- Reminder/recall systems may accelerate HPV vaccine series completion with minimal cost, particularly in specific contexts like Colorado.
