Understanding residents' domestic waste classification intention (WCI) and behavior (WCB) is key for effective waste management. Infrastructure and government publicity significantly boost the link between intention and behavior, while incentives do not.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Social Science
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Effective waste management relies on public participation in waste classification.
- The discrepancy between residents' waste classification intention (WCI) and waste classification behavior (WCB) is a critical issue.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate factors influencing residents' WCI and WCB.
- To explore the moderating effects of infrastructure (INF), government publicity (GP), and incentive measures (IM) on the intention-behavior relationship.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and attitude-behavior-condition (A-B-C) theory.
- Collected data from 584 residents in Chengdu, China, via face-to-face interviews.
- Analyzed data using structural equation modeling (SEM).
Main Results:
- Attitude (AT), perceived behavior control (PBC), and classification knowledge (CK) significantly influenced WCI, with AT having the greatest impact.
- CK and INF had a stronger direct impact on WCB than WCI.
- GP indirectly affected WCB via CK; INF and GP positively moderated the intention-behavior link.
- IM did not significantly influence WCB or the intention-behavior conversion.
Conclusions:
- Attitude, perceived behavior control, and knowledge are crucial for waste classification intention.
- Infrastructure and government publicity are vital for translating intention into actual waste classification behavior.
- Policy recommendations should focus on enhancing infrastructure and publicity rather than solely relying on incentives.
