Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Health Outcomes Research
  • Medical Informatics

Background:

  • Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are crucial for evaluating healthcare quality from a patient's viewpoint.
  • Otologists increasingly use PROMs, but selecting appropriate questionnaires is challenging and time-consuming.
  • This study aims to simplify PROM selection by offering a comprehensive overview of existing otology questionnaires.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To create a comprehensive overview of all validated, closed-ended otology questionnaires designed for adult populations.
  • To present the basic characteristics of these otology questionnaires.
  • To facilitate the selection process for otologists and researchers.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was performed on EMBASE and PubMed databases.
  • 13,345 unique records were screened, identifying questionnaires for otologic complaints (tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, etc.).
  • Questionnaires were evaluated for eligibility based on adult population, closed-ended questions, English language, and availability of development/validation papers.

Main Results:

  • A total of 155 unique questionnaires were selected for review.
  • The questionnaires were categorized by symptom: 33 for tinnitus, 23 for vertigo, and 84 for hearing loss.
  • Fifteen questionnaires addressed multiple otologic complaints, highlighting a gap in comprehensive symptom coverage.

Conclusions:

  • Numerous otology questionnaires exist, primarily focusing on hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus.
  • Few questionnaires address the multiple symptoms associated with various ear diseases.
  • This overview is the most comprehensive to date and will serve as a valuable resource for professionals and a protocol for future selection processes in related fields.
