- School Nursing
- Public Health Interventions
Background:
- Urban elementary students face significant stressors like poverty and family issues.
- Mindfulness interventions by teachers show benefits in prosocial behavior and stress reduction.
- The role of school nurses in delivering mindfulness programs is understudied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility of a school nurse-led mindfulness program.
- To evaluate the program's impact on emotional states in fourth-grade students.
Main Methods:
- A pre-test/post-test design was used.
- Fourth-grade students participated in a mindfulness program led by a school nurse.
- Emotional states were assessed before and after the intervention.
Main Results:
- Twelve students completed the mindfulness intervention.
- Participants reported the program was helpful.
- The school nurse demonstrated capability in delivering the intervention.
Conclusions:
- School nurses can potentially implement mindfulness programs in urban schools.
- With adequate preparation, school nurses may successfully deliver mindfulness curricula.
- Further planning is recommended for successful school nurse-led mindfulness initiatives.
