Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a serious condition requiring timely intervention.
  • Conventional surgical methods can be invasive and carry risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and simplicity of pneumatic retinopexy for uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
  • To compare outcomes with traditional surgical procedures.

Main Methods:

  • 12 patients with uncomplicated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment underwent pneumatic retinopexy.
  • Procedures involved transconjunctival cryothermy and intravitreal gas injection (sulphurhexafluoride or perfluoropropane).
  • Patients were followed for over 6 months post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • Successful retinal reattachment was achieved in 10 out of 12 patients after the initial procedure.
  • Post-operative visual acuity was 6/12 or better in 8 patients.
  • An additional 2 patients achieved visual acuity of 6/36 or better.

Conclusions:

  • Pneumatic retinopexy is an efficient and simple surgical option for selected cases of retinal detachment.
  • The outcomes of pneumatic retinopexy are comparable to conventional surgical techniques.
  • This minimally invasive approach offers a viable alternative for retinal detachment treatment.
