Summary

Synaesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon, was a key feature in two patients with major affective disorder. This suggests a link between sensory perception disturbances and mood disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Major affective disorder encompasses conditions like depression and bipolar disorder.
  • Synaesthesia is a neurological condition where stimulation of one sensory pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory pathway.

Observation:

  • Two case studies of patients diagnosed with major affective disorder are presented.
  • Synaesthesia was identified as a prominent and integral characteristic in both patients' conditions.

Findings:

  • The presence of synaesthesia suggests a potential overlap or connection between sensory processing and mood regulation.
  • Perceptual disturbances may be a significant, though perhaps underrecognized, symptom in certain affective disorders.

Implications:

  • Further research into the neurobiological underpinnings of synaesthesia in affective disorders is warranted.
  • Understanding this relationship could lead to novel diagnostic or therapeutic strategies for mood disorders.
