Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of video-based coaching versus traditional textbook learning for pediatric surgery trainees.
  • To evaluate the impact of different learning modalities on the acquisition of surgical skills.
  • To assess the feasibility and efficacy of video-based learning in surgical training programs.

Main Methods:

  • Ten pediatric surgery trainees were divided into two groups: one group received video-based coaching, and the other studied textbooks.
  • Five surgical procedures were selected: three MIS (Nissen fundoplication, partial nephrectomy, cholecystectomy) and two robotic (Lich-Gregoir reimplantation, Henderson-Hynes pyleoplasty).
  • A 100-question multiple-choice questionnaire assessed knowledge of surgical steps, with 20 questions per procedure.

Main Results:

  • The video-based coaching group (G1) achieved a median score of 82 correct answers (range 74-97).
  • The textbook group (G2) achieved a median score of 64.2 correct answers (range 53-79).
  • Statistical analysis (unpaired t-test) showed G1's scores were significantly better than G2's (P=0.0265).

Conclusions:

  • Video-based coaching is a feasible and effective method for supplementing surgical technique education in pediatric surgery.
  • Objective evaluation demonstrates that video-based coaching is statistically superior to textbook learning for surgical trainees.
  • Adoption of video-based learning is recommended for all surgical training programs, especially for MIS and robotic surgery.
