Fibronectin determination in pregnancy.

Summary

Fibronectin levels decrease in amniotic fluid during pregnancy and are significantly lower in newborns with sepsis. Plasma fibronectin levels did not significantly change during pregnancy or differ between premature and mature infants.

Background:

Fibronectin is a crucial glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion and immune response.
Changes in fibronectin levels may indicate physiological or pathological states.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate fibronectin concentrations in pregnant women and newborns.
To assess fibronectin levels in relation to pregnancy progression and neonatal sepsis.

Main Methods:

Immunoturbidimetric assay was used to quantify fibronectin levels.
Samples analyzed included plasma from nonpregnant and pregnant women, amniotic fluid, and umbilical cord blood.

Main Results:

A significant decrease in amniotic fluid fibronectin was observed during pregnancy.
Plasma fibronectin levels showed no significant changes during pregnancy.
Newborn sepsis was associated with significantly decreased plasma fibronectin levels.
No significant difference in fibronectin was found between premature and mature infants.

Conclusions:

Fibronectin concentration in amniotic fluid changes during pregnancy.
Plasma fibronectin levels are a potential biomarker for neonatal sepsis.
Fibronectin levels in umbilical cord blood do not differentiate between premature and mature infants.
