Background:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the thyroid is a rare and aggressive malignancy.
  • Accurate staging and assessment of tumor extent are crucial for effective treatment planning.

Observation:

  • A patient diagnosed with thyroid squamous cell carcinoma was evaluated.
  • Diagnostic imaging was performed using Iodine-123 (I-123).

Findings:

  • Iodine-123 imaging did not identify any "cold areas," which typically represent regions of decreased radioiodine uptake.
  • The imaging did, however, successfully demonstrate the posterior extension of the thyroid gland, indicating the tumor's anatomical involvement.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that standard Iodine-123 scintigraphy may not reliably detect all forms of thyroid SCC.
