Summary

Human upper limb reflexes change with body rotation. Tonic neck reflexes in the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscle increase with contralateral body turns and decrease with ipsilateral turns, unlike animal studies.

Background:

  • Tonic neck reflexes are postural reflexes originating from the neck that influence limb muscle tone.
  • Previous studies, primarily in animals, have described tonic neck reflexes affecting limb posture.
  • The specific responses of human upper limb reflexes to asymmetric body rotation remain less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the asymmetric tonic neck reflexes on human upper limbs.
  • To analyze changes in the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) H-reflex amplitude during body rotation with a stationary head.

Main Methods:

  • Eight healthy subjects participated in the study.
  • Body rotation was performed around the longitudinal axis at angles of 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 degrees to both the right and left.

  • The H-reflex amplitude of the right flexor carpi radialis muscle was recorded at each rotation angle and at 0 degrees (control).

    • A significant linear correlation was found between H-reflex amplitudes and body rotation angles in all subjects.

    Conclusions:

    • Human upper limb tonic neck reflexes exhibit an asymmetric response to body rotation.
    • These findings are contrary to observations in animal experiments.
    • The observed human responses may be attributed to the learned antigravity function of upper limb flexor muscles.
