Background:

Evaluating elite soccer referee performance is complex.
Objective metrics are needed to understand on-field positioning and movement.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and apply spatiotemporal metrics for assessing elite soccer referee performance.
To analyze referee positioning relative to players and the ball during a match.

Main Methods:

Utilized spatiotemporal data from players, ball, and referees in an elite soccer match.
Calculated assistant referee alignment with the second-last defender.
Analyzed referee diagonal movement patterns and distance to the ball.

Main Results:

Assistant referees maintained alignment within 1 meter of the second-last defender.
Referee positional area increased from 548 m² in the 1st half to 671 m² in the 2nd half.
Referee-to-ball distance increased in the 2nd half, with >80% between 5-30 meters.

Conclusions:

Spatiotemporal data provides objective metrics for referee performance evaluation.
Referee movement patterns and positioning change throughout a match.
Findings can inform the development of normative models for soccer referee behavior.
