The evolution of new genes is critical for speciation. Exon recombination, also known as exon shuffling or domain shuffling, is an important means of new gene formation. It is observed across vertebrates, invertebrates, and in some plants such as potatoes and sunflowers. Hybrid zones are narrow regions where two closely related species interact, mate, and produce hybrids. Relative to either parent species, hybrids may possess distinct phenotypic or genetic differences that impact their survival and reproductive success. The genetic variances introduced by hybridization influence species diversity and speciation processes within the hybrid zone.

Background:

The exstrophy-epispadias complex encompasses a spectrum of congenital midline malformations.
Bladder exstrophy, the most common in this spectrum, presents with classical and variant forms.

Observation:

This report describes a unique case of a hybrid bladder exstrophy variant.
The observed variant exhibited characteristics of both duplicate bladder exstrophy and a superior vesical fistula.

Findings:

The presented case represents a novel combination within the bladder exstrophy spectrum.
This hybrid form challenges existing classifications and diagnostic criteria for bladder exstrophy variants.

Implications:

Understanding such rare variants is crucial for accurate diagnosis and tailored surgical management.
Further research into the embryological origins of these hybrid forms may enhance our comprehension of midline defects.
