Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate developmental stability (tracking) of technical skills in male youth basketball players.
  • To retrospectively profile stable and unstable skill tracking patterns over three years.
  • To examine the relationship between baseline characteristics and skill trajectory.

Main Methods:

  • Tracked 97 male basketball players bi-annually over 3 years.
  • Assessed technical skills using the AAHPERD test battery.
  • Collected anthropometric, body composition, maturation, and physical performance data; analyzed using Cohen's kappa (κ).

Main Results:

  • Low tracking (κ = 0.20–0.33) observed across most individual skill tests for both under-12 and under-14 groups.
  • Overall technical skill showed moderate tracking in under-12 (κ = 0.47) and low tracking in under-14 (κ = 0.26).
  • Early skilled players (under-12) with better growth-motor profiles were often selected for regional teams.

Conclusions:

  • Individual technical skill trajectories in youth basketball demonstrate low-to-moderate tracking.
  • A strong growth-motor performance profile appears essential for maintaining high skill levels.
  • Coaches should monitor player development trajectories to optimize training and understand skill variability.
