Background:

Patient education and involvement in treatment programming improve postdischarge outcomes.
Individualized, skills-focused, and recovery-oriented programs reduce symptoms and enhance engagement.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of a safety planning group for creating individualized safety plans.
To assess the utility and helpfulness of these safety plans after psychiatric inpatient discharge.

Main Methods:

A standardized safety plan was introduced in 1-hour group sessions on an adult inpatient psychiatric unit.
A rubric assessed the degree of patient individualization of the safety plans.
Patients were contacted one week postdischarge to determine plan possession and usage.

Main Results:

Patient safety plans were found to be relatively individualized (mean score 32.85/44).
Postdischarge, 96.1% of contacted patients retained a copy of their safety plan.
36.8% of patients reported using their safety plan, with 67.9% of those finding it helpful.

Conclusions:

Individualized safety plans developed during psychiatric inpatient stays can be a valuable tool.
These plans demonstrate utility and are perceived as helpful by patients postdischarge.
