Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

415
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Ophthalmology
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • The optic canal (OC) transmits the optic nerve (ON) and ophthalmic artery (OphA).
  • Pathologies involving the OC necessitate surgical decompression for optimal outcomes.
  • Surgical approaches include transcranial and endoscopic endonasal methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To demonstrate the technical nuances of optic canal (OC) drilling using both transcranial microscopic and endoscopic endonasal approaches.
  • To illustrate the application of OC decompression in various clinical scenarios.

Main Methods:

  • The study presents a video demonstrating OC drilling techniques.
  • Animated illustrations and operative videos are utilized for clarity.
  • Four representative cases (2 transcranial, 2 endoscopic) are showcased.

Main Results:

  • The video provides a comprehensive guide to OC decompression.
  • Technical details and considerations for both surgical approaches are highlighted.
  • The presented cases cover a range of pathologies requiring OC drilling.

Conclusions:

  • Optic canal (OC) drilling is an essential technique for managing pathologies affecting the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery.
  • Both transcranial microscopic and endoscopic endonasal approaches offer tailored solutions for OC decompression.
  • Understanding these techniques is vital for neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists aiming for improved disease control and vision preservation.
