Adiponectin receptors (ADIPORs) are re-evaluated as membrane fluidity sensors. These evolutionarily conserved proteins regulate membrane homeostasis by sensing and restoring phospholipid composition, independent of adiponectin.
Area of Science:
- Cell biology
- Molecular biology
- Membrane biophysics
Background:
- Adiponectin receptors (ADIPORs) were traditionally viewed as mediators of adiponectin's anti-diabetic effects.
- Recent studies in yeast, C. elegans, and mammalian cell models suggest a different role for ADIPORs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review evidence supporting ADIPORs as conserved regulators of membrane homeostasis.
- To highlight their function as membrane fluidity sensors independent of adiponectin.
Main Methods:
- Review of existing literature and experimental findings.
- Analysis of data from yeast, C. elegans, and mammalian cell models.
- Examination of ADIPOR signaling pathways related to membrane composition.
Main Results:
- ADIPORs function as evolutionarily conserved sensors of membrane fluidity.
- They regulate phospholipid composition and membrane fluidity restoration.
- This function is independent of adiponectin binding.
Conclusions:
- ADIPORs are critical regulators of membrane homeostasis and fluidity.
- Their role extends beyond adiponectin signaling, impacting fundamental cellular processes.
- Understanding this revised function opens new avenues for physiological research.
