Summary

Ductal plate malformations, liver abnormalities from incomplete embryonic remodeling, were found in 18 captive snakes. These incidental findings, characterized by irregular bile ducts and fibrous tissue, showed no malignant transformation.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Herpetology
  • Hepatology

Background:

  • Ductal plate malformations (DPMs) are congenital liver abnormalities resulting from aberrant embryonic development.
  • These malformations are documented in various species, with a prevalence in domestic mammals and fish.
  • Limited data exists on DPMs in reptilian species, particularly snakes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence of ductal plate malformations in captive snakes.
  • To histopathologically characterize these malformations in a snake population.
  • To assess for potential malignant transformation within these lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Post-mortem examination of 18 captive snakes with liver lesions.
  • Histopathological analysis of liver tissues, including Hematoxylin and Eosin staining.

  • Application of histochemical (Gomori's trichrome) and immunohistochemical (pan-cytokeratin) stains on select cases.
  • Main Results:

    • Ductal plate malformations were identified in 18 snakes (10 colubrids, 6 vipers, 2 boids) with a mean age of 17 years.
    • Lesions presented as nodules of irregular bile ducts within fibrous stroma, categorized as von Meyenburg complexes, cystic liver disease, or hybrid subtypes.
    • Comorbidities such as neoplasia and systemic inflammation were common; no malignant transformation was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Ductal plate malformations occur in captive snakes and are typically incidental findings.
    • The characterized lesions resemble those seen in other species, with variations in fibrous stroma and bile duct dilation.
    • These malformations in snakes do not appear to undergo malignant transformation based on this study's findings.
