Summary

Previous immunization against thyroglobulin prevents experimental allergic thyroiditis (EAT) in rats. Transferring spleen cells from sensitized donors also confers resistance, even without prolonged cell survival.

Background:

  • Experimental allergic thyroiditis (EAT) is an autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroglobulin is a key autoantigen in EAT induction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of prior immunization with thyroglobulin on the susceptibility to EAT.
  • To determine if adoptive transfer of immune cells can confer resistance to EAT.

Main Methods:

  • Rats were immunized with thyroglobulin.
  • Subsequent challenge with a standard EAT sensitization protocol was performed.
  • Spleen cells from sensitized donors were transferred to neonatal rats.

Main Results:

  • Prior immunization with thyroglobulin 5 weeks before sensitization conferred strong resistance to EAT induction.
