Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Background:

The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire-9 (APQ-9) is a common tool for assessing parenting behaviors.
Previous studies show inconsistent reliability coefficients for its three subscales.

Purpose of the Study:

To estimate mean internal consistency reliability for APQ-9 subscales.
To identify factors causing variations in reliability coefficients.

Main Methods:

A reliability generalization meta-analysis was performed.
Included 113 coefficient alphas from 31,572 informants across 32 studies.

Main Results:

Mean alpha values were acceptable: .84 (positive parenting), .66 (inconsistent discipline), .70 (poor supervision).
Moderator analyses indicated administration format, country, language, population, score characteristics, and sample size influenced reliability.

Conclusions:

The parent-report APQ-9 is a useful measure of parenting behaviors.
Findings support APQ-9's utility despite reliability variations.
Identified moderators offer directions for future research and application.
