Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. Summary

A new diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) showed comparable performance to an established extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL. Both lenses allocated more energy to the primary focus, with variations in optical quality depending on pupil size and defocus.

Background:

  • A novel diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) was developed.
  • Comparison with an established extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL was needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the optical performance of a new diffractive IOL.
  • To compare its optical behavior against a current EDOF IOL.

Main Methods:

  • Ray propagation analysis using monochromatic light.
  • Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measurement at 50lp/mm with 3.0 and 4.5 mm apertures.
  • Assessment of two IOLs: Proming EDOF Multifocal AM2UX and AT LARA 829MP.

Main Results:

  • Both IOLs exhibited two distinct foci with preferential energy distribution to the primary focus.
  • MTF values at 50lp/mm varied between IOLs and pupil sizes.
  • AT LARA showed higher MTF at 3.0 mm pupil (primary focus: 0.39 vs 0.37), while Proming showed better image quality at 2-3D defocus.

Conclusions:

  • The Proming IOL functioned as a low-add bifocal lens under tested conditions.
  • Its optical properties were similar to the AT LARA EDOF IOL.
  • AT LARA excelled in low defocus scenarios, whereas Proming offered better image quality in the 2-3D defocus range.
