Summary

A novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameter, SUKIMA, effectively predicts visual acuity and metamorphopsia in patients with epiretinal membrane (ERM). This finding offers new insights for managing ERM.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) can affect visual function.
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is crucial for visualizing retinal structures.
  • Predictive markers for visual outcomes in ERM are needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the relationship between visual function and OCT parameters in eyes with idiopathic ERM.
  • To introduce and evaluate a novel OCT parameter, SUKIMA, for ERM assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-nine eyes with ERM were analyzed using OCT.
  • Central retinal thickness (CRT) and a new parameter, SUKIMA (gap between ERM and retina), were measured.
  • Metamorphopsia scores (MV, MH, Mave) and visual acuity (VA) were assessed.

Main Results:

  • SUKIMA (average of vertical and horizontal measurements, SUKIMAave) and CRT were associated with logMAR VA.
  • SUKIMAave and CRT correlated with metamorphopsia severity (Mave).
  • Specific SUKIMA measurements (SUKIMAh, SUKIMAv) showed significant relationships with vertical (MV) and horizontal (MH) metamorphopsia, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • SUKIMA is a novel OCT parameter that demonstrates utility in predicting both visual acuity and metamorphopsia in ERM patients.
  • This parameter may aid in the clinical assessment and management of ERM.
