Summary

Depressed males showed no significant differences in testosterone, estradiol, or cortisol levels compared to controls. However, total testosterone levels in depressed individuals were found to decrease with age.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differences in total and free testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol levels between depressed males and age-matched healthy controls.
  • To explore the relationship between these hormone levels, age, and depression severity.

Main Methods:

  • Serum levels of total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol were measured.
  • Participants included 12 males diagnosed with depression and 12 age-matched healthy male volunteers.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed in total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, or cortisol levels between the depressed group and the control group.
  • A significant negative correlation was found between total testosterone and age within the depressed group.
  • No significant correlation was found between total testosterone and the severity of depression.

Conclusions:

  • Circulating levels of testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol do not appear to differ between depressed males and healthy controls.
  • Age may influence total testosterone levels in depressed males, independent of depression severity.
