Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry

Background:

  • Cannabis sativa L. chemical composition is well-studied, yet its lipidome remains largely unexplored.
  • Understanding the lipid profile is crucial for various applications, including nutraceuticals and industrial uses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and present an analytical workflow for the comprehensive determination of polar lipids in hemp.
  • To identify and quantify a wide range of lipid species within Cannabis sativa extracts.

Main Methods:

  • Lipid extraction from hemp followed by enrichment and isolation using graphitized carbon black sorbent.
  • Analysis of isolated lipids via liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry.
  • Utilized a semi-automated platform with Lipostar software for efficient lipid identification.

Main Results:

  • Successfully identified 189 distinct polar lipid species in the hemp extract.
  • The identified lipids include various phospholipids and sulfolipids, significantly expanding the known lipidome of Cannabis sativa.
  • This represents the highest number of identified lipid species reported for this plant species.

Conclusions:

  • The presented analytical workflow enables a high-throughput and comprehensive profiling of polar lipids in hemp.
  • This detailed lipidomic analysis significantly advances the understanding of Cannabis sativa L. chemical constituents.
  • The findings provide a valuable dataset for future research into the functional roles and applications of hemp lipids.
