Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Clostridium septicum is an uncommon cause of endogenous endophthalmitis.
  • Panophthalmitis is a severe, sight-threatening intraocular infection.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with endogenous Clostridium septicum panophthalmitis.
  • The infection manifested with a rapid and severe sequence of ocular signs and symptoms.

Findings:

  • Intensive antibiotic therapy proved ineffective in controlling the infection.
  • Microscopic examination revealed extensive infarction, necrosis, and vascular thrombosis (central retinal artery and choroidal vessels).

Implications:

  • This case highlights the aggressive nature of Clostridium septicum panophthalmitis.
