Instructor-led distance learning (DL) offers CPR training comparable to conventional learning (CL). This method provides a viable alternative for layperson CPR education, especially when in-person classes are impractical.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Emergency Medicine
- Public Health
Background:
- Conventional learning (CL) for Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training faces limitations including cost, time, and space constraints.
- Effective CPR training is crucial for improving patient survival and neurological outcomes.
- Alternative training methods are needed to overcome the barriers associated with traditional in-person instruction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of instructor-led distance learning (DL) for CPR training among laypersons.
- To compare CPR skills acquired through DL with those acquired through conventional, face-to-face CL.
- To determine if DL is a suitable alternative to CL for CPR education.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled study involving 62 high school students in Korea.
- Participants were assigned to either instructor-led distance learning (DL) via videoconferencing or conventional classroom-based learning (CL).
- CPR skills were assessed and compared between the two groups post-training.
Main Results:
- The DL group demonstrated CPR skill levels comparable to the CL group across most measured variables.
- A statistically significant improvement in mean chest compression depth was observed in the DL group post-training (p<0.001).
- No significant differences were noted in other CPR skill variables between the DL and CL groups.
Conclusions:
- Instructor-led distance learning (DL) is a suitable and effective alternative to conventional learning (CL) for CPR training.
- DL provides a flexible and accessible method for layperson CPR education, particularly relevant in situations limiting face-to-face interaction, such as pandemics.
- This approach can help broaden access to vital CPR skills training.
