Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation III: AED Use

198
Introduction to AEDAn Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, leading to a loss of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. In such emergencies, time is of the essence, and using an AED, combined with Cardiopulmonary...

Area of Science:

  • Trauma Care and Emergency Medicine
  • Medical Education and Training
  • Global Health Equity

Background:

  • Limited studies assess Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) efficacy in low- and middle-income countries.
  • This study evaluates the long-term impact of the ATLS India program on provider knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the benefits of ATLS training in India.
  • To assess the attrition of these benefits over time.
  • To identify challenges in ATLS implementation.

Main Methods:

  • A decade-long follow-up (2009-2019) of ATLS providers certified by the ATLS India program.
  • A Delphi-method-informed survey instrument administered via Google Forms to randomly selected providers.
  • Descriptive statistical analysis of survey responses.

Main Results:

  • Over 7,847 providers trained; 1,030 responded to the survey (41.2% response rate).
  • High reported improvements in knowledge (98.3%), psychomotor skills (95.7%), organizational skills (96.9%), trauma management (98.7%), and self-confidence (91%).
  • Benefits persisted beyond 2-3 years for a majority of respondents; implementation challenges included lack of trained staff and attitude issues.

Conclusions:

  • ATLS demonstrates overwhelmingly positive cognitive, psychomotor, organizational, and affective impact in the Indian context.
  • ATLS serves as a vital resource for critically injured patients in resource-constrained settings lacking formal trauma systems.
  • ATLS faculties showed more pronounced improvements in self-confidence and ATLS promulgation than providers.
