Sinonasal renal cell-like adenocarcinoma (SNRCLA) is a rare nasal tumor. Surgical excision is the primary treatment, but outcomes vary, and optimal management remains uncertain.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Otorhinolaryngology
Background:
- Sinonasal renal cell-like adenocarcinoma (SNRCLA) is a rare malignant tumor.
- Its clinical course and treatment response are not well-established.
Observation:
- A case of SNRCLA in a 26-year-old male presented with headache, epistaxis, and nasal obstruction.
- Imaging revealed extensive ethmoid sinus involvement with cribriform plate extension.
- The patient underwent surgical excision and adjuvant radiotherapy, but required salvage surgery for persistent disease.
Findings:
- A literature review identified 14 previously reported SNRCLA cases.
- Common symptoms include epistaxis and nasal obstruction.
- Surgical excision was the primary treatment in most cases, with adjuvant radiotherapy used in some.
- Three cases experienced persistent or recurrent disease.
Implications:
- Surgical excision is the current mainstay for SNRCLA treatment.
- Adjuvant radiotherapy may be considered, but outcomes are variable.
- SNRCLA appears to be a low-grade tumor with no reported metastases or deaths.
- Further research is needed to establish best practices for SNRCLA management.
