Breastfeeding knowledge in university nursing students. A multicentre study in Spain

Purpose of the Study:

• To assess the breastfeeding knowledge level of nursing students across three Spanish universities.
• To identify variables associated with the acquisition of breastfeeding knowledge among these students.

• 1540 nursing students from four degree years at three universities participated.
• The self-administered AprendeLact Questionnaire assessed breastfeeding knowledge and socio-demographic variables.

• Fourth-year students at Castellón university scored higher, influenced by practicals in maternity/neonatology, breastfeeding association membership, and infant feeding history.

Conclusions:

• Progressive, transversal syllabi and real-world clinical experience in maternity settings can enhance breastfeeding knowledge.
• Improving nursing curricula is essential for equipping future professionals to effectively support breastfeeding mothers.
