Many fundamental cell functions such as muscle contraction and nerve transmission rely on the electrical signals produced by the movement of positively and negatively charged ions across the cell membrane. Summary

Expired Indian standard patch test kits reliably identify allergic contact dermatitis allergens. Results suggest allergens remain potent beyond labeled expiry dates, but further large-scale studies are needed for confirmation.

Background:

The efficacy of using expired patch test kits has not been previously assessed.
Allergic contact dermatitis diagnosis relies on accurate patch testing.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the reliability of expired Indian standard patch test kits.
To compare allergen reactivity from expired vs. new kits.

Main Methods:

Thirty adults with allergic contact dermatitis were tested using Finn chambers.
Three groups received kits with 2016, 2015, and 2014 expiry dates.
Results were compared against a 2018 expiry control kit.

Main Results:

Positive reactions with identical intensities were observed across all tested kits.
Parthenium, colophony, fragrance mix, thiuram mix, and paraphenylene diamine were key allergens.
Reactivity levels varied slightly with increasing expiry duration.

Conclusions:

Expired Indian standard patch test kits demonstrate reliable allergen detection.
Further extensive studies using diverse kits are recommended for validation.
Clinical interpretation of results from expired kits requires caution.
