Biomarkers as a Prognostic Factor in COPD Exacerbation: A Cohort Study

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) greater than 5 is a strong predictor of in-hospital mortality or ICU admission for patients with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD). An elevated NLR also indicates a longer hospital stay for these patients.

- An NLR > 5 was also linked to a lower probability of alive discharge (SHR: 0.73; 95% CI: 0.57-0.94), indicating a longer hospital stay.
- Other tested biomarkers (CRP, MPV, eosinophils) did not show significant association with the primary outcomes in the adjusted analysis.
Conclusions:
- The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) > 5 serves as a robust predictor for adverse in-hospital outcomes in AECOPD patients.
- Elevated NLR is associated with increased mortality risk, higher ICU admission rates, and prolonged hospitalization.
- NLR measurement offers valuable prognostic information for managing hospitalized AECOPD patients.
