Mean Platelet Volume in Pediatric Patients Infected with Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Background:
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a parameter of platelet size and activity. Research on MPV in Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is not reported.
Methods:
This study reviewed whether there was a difference in the MPV in the results of M. pneumoniae immunoglobulin M (IgM) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests in 210 pediatric patients with pneumonia suspected to be caused by M. pneumoniae.
Results:
The MPV was significantly lower in the IgM-positive group than in the IgM- negative group (p = 0.041). Among the PCR-positive patients (n = 73), the IgM-positive group showed significantly lower MPV than the IgM-negative group (p = 0.014). Meanwhile, among the PCR-negative patients (n = 137), there was no significant difference in the MPV between the IgM-positive and negative groups (p = 0.269).
Conclusions:
This result suggests that pneumonia caused by M. pneumoniae could be a condition associated with low MPV.
Insights
Mean platelet volume (MPV) was significantly lower in pediatric patients with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. This finding suggests a link between Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia and reduced MPV.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Infectious Diseases
- Hematology
Background:
- Mean platelet volume (MPV) reflects platelet size and activity.
- Limited research exists on MPV in Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between MPV and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in pediatric patients.
- To determine if MPV differs in patients with confirmed M. pneumoniae infection.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 210 pediatric pneumonia patients.
- Comparison of MPV levels based on M. pneumoniae immunoglobulin M (IgM) and PCR test results.
Main Results:
- MPV was significantly lower in IgM-positive patients compared to IgM-negative patients (p=0.041).
- Among PCR-positive patients, IgM-positive individuals had significantly lower MPV (p=0.014).
- No significant MPV difference was observed between IgM-positive and negative PCR-negative patients (p=0.269).
Conclusions:
- Pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae may be associated with lower mean platelet volume.
- MPV could serve as a potential indicator in M. pneumoniae infections.
