Design Example: Sustainability in Concrete Building

267
As the construction industry moves towards more eco-friendly practices, concrete's adaptability and its ability to incorporate sustainable features make it a key material in the drive towards greener building solutions.
There are multiple approaches to achieve sustainability in a commercial concrete building. For instance, construct a concrete parking area under the building, utilizing pervious concrete paver blocks in open areas to facilitate rainwater collection through an underground...

Wood Products01:21

Wood Products

172
Wood products encompass a broad range of materials crafted from wood strands, veneers, lumber, and even waste wood-like shreds, designed for both structural and nonstructural purposes. Various specialized wood products have been developed to enhance strength, durability, and versatility in building applications.
Glue-laminated wood, often referred to as glulam, combines multiple smaller pieces of dimensional lumber using adhesives to form a single, larger piece. Cross-laminated timber consists...

Wood Panel Products01:18

Wood Panel Products

177
Wood panel products are essential materials used in construction for applications such as flooring, siding, and roofing, typically available in standard dimensions of 4 feet by 8 feet, with thicknesses varying from one-quarter of an inch to one and one-eighth inches. Among the most common types of wood panels is plywood, which is produced by gluing multiple layers of thin wood veneers under pressure. The grain of the outer veneers runs lengthwise, while the grains of the interior layers run...

Steel Manufacturing01:26

Steel Manufacturing

956
Steel manufacturing is a multi-stage process that begins by smelting iron ore into cast iron in a blast furnace. This initial stage involves layering iron ore with coke, a type of fuel, and crushed limestone within the furnace. The coke is ignited with a high volume of air, leading to the creation of carbon monoxide, which acts to reduce the iron ore to pure iron.
During this smelting process, limestone plays a crucial role by forming slag. Slag captures impurities within the molten iron, such...

Area of Science:

  • Industrial Engineering
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Sustainable Manufacturing

Background:

  • Wooden pallets are essential for logistics in manufacturing but face material shortages, particularly in the pulp and paper industry.
  • Existing pallet supply chains are vulnerable to disruptions, impacting production and delivery schedules.
  • The need for sustainable and resilient solutions for material sourcing in industrial logistics is critical.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To apply the 3-R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to mitigate wooden pallet shortages.
  • To develop and validate practical techniques for sustainable pallet management within a closed-loop system.
  • To provide a framework for companies to implement policies addressing pallet material scarcity.

Main Methods:

  • Development of three distinct techniques based on the 3-R principles within a closed-loop system.
  • Experimental validation of techniques including repairing and reusing waste pallets, and utilizing internal Finger Glued-Laminate products.
  • Assessment of developed techniques against mandatory strength and design criteria for industrial pallets.

Main Results:

  • Successful implementation of three 3-R based techniques for pallet acquisition and management.
  • All developed techniques met required strength and design standards for effective pallet use.
  • Demonstrated feasibility of a closed-loop system for sustainable pallet resource management.

Conclusions:

  • The 3-R concept, applied through the developed closed-loop system techniques, effectively addresses wooden pallet shortages.
  • Implementing these strategies can lead to improved logistics quality and on-time product delivery.
  • This research provides a viable model for sustainable material management in industrial settings.
