Area of Science:

  • Ecology
  • Botany
  • Stable Isotope Ecology

Background:

  • Accurate tracking of seed dispersal and seedling recruitment is crucial for understanding plant population dynamics.
  • Existing seed-marking methods often face limitations in tracking the entire process from seed movement to seedling establishment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel, nondestructive method for tracking seed dispersal and subsequent seedling recruitment.
  • To utilize stable isotope 15N labeling for tracing seed fate in natural environments.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a 15N xylem injection technique to label mature seeds of Quercus variabilis.
  • Applied the 15N labeling to acorns and tracked their dispersal and establishment by seed-eating animals in a field setting.
  • Assessed the impact of 15N labeling on seed viability, animal selection, germination, and seedling establishment.

Main Results:

  • Successfully enriched 15N in both acorns and their resulting seedlings of Quercus variabilis via xylem injection.
  • Demonstrated the ability to track seedlings established from 15N-labeled acorns dispersed by animals.
  • Confirmed that the 15N xylem injection method had minimal impact on seed characteristics and did not significantly affect seed selection, germination, or seedling establishment.

Conclusions:

  • The 15N xylem injection method provides a valid and effective tool for tracking seed dispersal and seedling recruitment.
  • This technique is particularly useful for studying seed dispersal mediated by seed-eating animals.
  • The method offers a powerful approach for advancing seed dispersal ecology research.
