Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Neonatal Care
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Pericardial effusion is a critical condition requiring timely intervention.
  • Limited provider experience with pericardiocentesis due to infrequent encounters can lead to delayed or emergent procedures.
  • Effective training is crucial for managing neonatal pericardial effusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the creation of a novel, low-cost, high-fidelity neonatal model for practicing pericardiocentesis.
  • To provide a training tool for neonatal care providers to gain proficiency in unguided pericardiocentesis.
  • To enhance the management of neonatal pericardial effusion through simulation-based education.

Main Methods:

  • Development of an inexpensive and easily reproducible neonatal model using readily available materials.
  • Focus on simulating unguided pericardiocentesis, excluding simultaneous imaging.
  • Inclusion of a supply list, checklist, and suggested scenario for standardized training.

Main Results:

  • The created model is high-fidelity, low-cost, and simple to construct.
  • The model facilitates practice for a wide range of neonatal care providers.
  • The training approach emphasizes unguided pericardiocentesis, addressing a gap in simulation.

Conclusions:

  • This neonatal pericardiocentesis model offers a valuable, accessible training resource.
  • Simulation with this model can improve provider competency and preparedness for managing pericardial effusion.
  • The model supports the development of essential skills for life-saving interventions in neonates.
