Summary

This study shows that augmented reality (AR) headsets are feasible for orthopedic surgery, with surgeons satisfied with image quality and accuracy. Future use is recommended despite some ergonomic challenges with the AR device.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the feasibility of using a commercial AR head-mounted device in orthopedic surgery.
  • To evaluate surgeon satisfaction and performance with AR-guided navigation.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen orthopedic surgeons used a holographic AR headset (HoloLens) during 25 surgical procedures.
  • Patient-specific 3D anatomic information was provided via the AR device.
  • Surgeon experience was assessed using a 58-item questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Surgeons reported high satisfaction with image quality (85/100) and virtual object accuracy (84/100).
  • Comfort was rated at 79/100; voice command (68/100) and gesture (66/100) functionality received lower scores.
  • The highest potential was identified for deformity correction (87/100).

  • Augmented Reality offers a compact, low-cost navigation alternative for surgery.
  • The tested AR headset demonstrated feasibility in a real-world orthopedic setting.
  • While generally satisfactory, technical and ergonomic improvements are needed for AR devices.
