Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) do not show significant differences in moral judgments compared to healthy individuals. This study indicates that SSD does not impair moral cognition or the integration of beliefs into moral decision-making.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Cognitive Psychology
Background:
- Schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) is characterized by socio-cognitive impairments.
- Evidence for deficits in moral cognition within SSD is limited.
- Understanding moral judgment in SSD is crucial for a comprehensive view of cognitive functioning.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate moral judgments in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD).
- To determine if SSD affects general moral cognition or the integration of beliefs into moral judgments.
- To examine moral decision-making using a vignette-based task.
Main Methods:
- A 2x2 design study involving 23 patients with SSD and 32 healthy controls.
- Participants rated the moral permissibility of actions in vignettes featuring protagonists with neutral or malicious intentions and neutral or negative outcomes.
- Both null hypothesis significance testing and Bayes analyses were employed.
Main Results:
- Schizophrenia patients' moral permissibility ratings did not significantly differ from healthy controls.
- Bayes analyses supported the null hypothesis, indicating no significant difference.
- Performance on the task was not correlated with symptom severity or medication status.
Conclusions:
- The findings do not support the hypothesis of deficient moral judgments in schizophrenia spectrum disorder.
- Patients with SSD demonstrated no observable difficulties in integrating beliefs into moral permissibility ratings.
- Moral cognition appears to be preserved in individuals with SSD, contrary to some expectations based on socio-cognitive deficits.
