Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between peripheral neuropathy severity and cognitive performance in older adults.
  • To determine if peripheral neuropathy is a risk factor for cognitive decline in the aging population.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 1999-2002) including 828 participants.
  • Assessed cognitive performance using the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST).
  • Quantified peripheral neuropathy severity by the number of insensate foot areas detected via monofilament examination; analyzed using multivariate linear regression.

Main Results:

  • A significant negative correlation was found between the number of insensate foot areas and DSST scores (P for trend <.001).
  • The association remained significant after adjusting for relevant variables.
