Background:

Geriatric syndromes significantly impact older adults with cancer.
Oncology nurses are crucial for early identification of these syndromes.
Timely recognition facilitates treatment adherence and decision-making.

Purpose of the Study:

To implement a nursing-led screening process for geriatric syndromes in hospitalized older cancer patients.
To determine the types and frequency of geriatric syndromes encountered.
To evaluate the feasibility of using the SPICES tool in this population.

Main Methods:

Nurses received training on the SPICES (Sleep disorders, Problems with eating or feeding, Incontinence, Confusion, Evidence of falls, Skin breakdown) tool.
Screening was conducted for geriatric syndromes among hospitalized older adult cancer patients.
Electronic health records were utilized for documentation and patient profiling.

Main Results:

Staff nurses demonstrated capability in leading evidence-based practice initiatives.
Adherence to the SPICES screening protocol was 47%.
Approximately 80% of patients presented with two or more geriatric syndromes.

Conclusions:

The SPICES tool can be effectively implemented by oncology nurses to screen for geriatric syndromes.
A high prevalence of multiple geriatric syndromes was observed in older cancer patients.
Nursing-sensitive interventions are essential for managing geriatric syndromes in this population.
