Background:

  • Hepatic cytochrome P450-dependent oxidation is deficient in 5-10% of Caucasians.
  • A similar prevalence of migraine exists in this population.
  • A potential link between oxidation status and dietary triggers in migraine pathogenesis was hypothesized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the hypothesis that impaired oxidation plays a role in migraine pathogenesis.
  • To investigate the relationship between debrisoquine hydroxylation (a marker of oxidation status) and migraine.

Main Methods:

  • Debrisoquine hydroxylation was used to assess oxidation status in 37 migraine sufferers and 26 age- and sex-matched controls.
  • The metabolic ratio (MR) of debrisoquine to 4-hydroxydebrisoquine in urine was calculated.
