Summary

Renal mass biopsies accurately identify tumor subtypes but may underestimate aggressive features. Adding BRCA1-associated protein-1 (BAP1) testing to clear cell renal cell carcinoma biopsies can improve prognostic accuracy for active surveillance.

Background:

  • Active surveillance of small renal masses necessitates precise prognostication from biopsies.
  • Accurate assessment of prognostic parameters in renal mass biopsies is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of renal mass biopsies in assessing prognostic factors, including histologic subtype, by comparing them to nephrectomy samples.
  • To determine the reliability of specific prognostic markers, such as BRCA1-associated protein-1 (BAP1) status, in biopsy specimens.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patients who underwent renal mass biopsy between 2004-2018.
  • Evaluation of biopsy samples for prognostic factors: tumor grade, necrosis, sarcomatoid/rhabdoid change, and BAP1 status.
  • Comparison of biopsy findings with subsequent nephrectomy specimen analyses to determine accuracy.
