Bonding and Strength of Aggregate01:12

Bonding and Strength of Aggregate

293
The bond between aggregate particles and the cement matrix is significantly influenced by the shape and surface texture of the aggregates. High-strength concretes benefit from a rougher texture, which leads to stronger bonding due to greater adhesion. Angular aggregates with larger surface areas also enhance this bond. The bonding quality, however, is complex to assess as no universally accepted test exists. Good bonding is indicated when a crushed concrete specimen shows some aggregate...

Summary

Acrylic resins like Jet and Duralay demonstrated superior bonding to prepolymerized polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture bases compared to composite resins. This finding is crucial for improving the longevity of CAD-CAM dentures.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering
  • Prosthodontics

Background:

  • Ensuring robust bonding between pickup materials and prepolymerized polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is critical for the success of computer-aided-design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dentures.
  • Limited research exists on the bond strength between newer generations of prepolymerized PMMA and various chairside pickup materials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the bond strength of three distinct chairside implant LOCATOR attachment pickup material groups bonded to prepolymerized PMMA.
  • To compare the pushout force, an indicator of bond strength, among different pickup materials.

Main Methods:

  • Prepolymerized PMMA (Lucitone 199) disks were prepared with central holes.
  • Six pickup materials (composite resins with/without bonding agents, acrylic resins) were tested.
  • Axial pushout testing was performed on specimens, with half subjected to thermocycling.

Main Results:

  • Acrylic resins (Duralay, Jet denture repair acrylic) exhibited significantly higher pushout forces than composite resins, both with and without bonding agents.
  • Thermocycling generally maintained or slightly decreased bond strength, with notable exceptions in specific composite groups.
  • Fracture pattern analysis revealed variations among material groups, correlating with pushout force.

Conclusions:

  • Jet denture repair acrylic and Duralay demonstrate superior adhesion to Lucitone 199 CAD-CAM denture base material.
  • These acrylic resins offer a more reliable bond compared to tested composite resins, including those with bonding agents.
  • Findings suggest acrylic resins are preferable for chairside pickup applications with this CAD-CAM PMMA material.
