Summary

Adolescent bunions (hallux valgus) are strongly linked to flatfeet (pes planus). Radiographic analysis revealed a significantly higher incidence of flatfeet in adolescents with bunions than previously assumed.

Background:

  • Adolescent hallux valgus, commonly known as bunions, is a prevalent foot deformity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively assess the prevalence of pes planus in adolescents diagnosed with hallux valgus.
  • To characterize the specific radiographic features of hallux valgus in this adolescent population.
  • To determine the correlation between flatfeet and bunion deformity in adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective radiographic analysis of 36 adolescents with 66 cases of hallux valgus.
  • Radiographs were evaluated for standard hallux valgus measurements (intermetatarsal angle, metatarsus varus angle).
  • Specific measurements for pes planus were assessed: talar pitch, calcaneal plantar angle, dorsoplantar talonavicular angle, and lateral talocalcaneal angle.
