Postoperative pain relief using local anesthetic instillation.

Summary

Instilling local anesthetic before wound closure significantly reduces postoperative foot pain. This method offers a safe and effective alternative to oral or parenteral pain medications and local blocks.

Oral narcotics have side effects, parenteral agents are impractical for outpatients, and local blocks require time and skill.

To evaluate the efficacy of local anesthetic wound instillation for reducing postoperative foot pain.

Instillation of 0.5% bupivacaine into the surgical wound prior to closure.
